Schiffman, Lawrence : New York University

Lawrence Schiffman is Professor of Hebrew and Judaic Studiesin New York University. He is an authority on the Dead Sea Scrolls and their relation to talmudic literature, a subject on which hehas authored four books, as well as a book on the Jewish Christian schism (Who Was a Jew? , Ktav, 1985)

Professor Lawrence Shiffman's well-organized and profusely-illustrated history of Judaism in Late Antiquity, From Text to Tradition : A History of Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism, has been adopted for use in several hundred Jewish and intertestamental history courses. All the basic documents of the various religious trends of the Second Temple and Rabbinic periods are represented, as well as important historical sources such as Josephus, Iggeret Rav Sherira Gaon, the chronicle of Nathan ha-Bavli, and many others.
